In Peru, there are more than six thousand farming communities which comprehend a population of more than three million farmers and the 40% of farming lands of the country. Nevertheless, the majority of these farmers live in poor or very poor conditions; they lack the basic services, with poor human resources and a short-term approach that orientates their decisions.
The arrival of a mining company to the community may contribute to its growth by developing an offer of services and the required learning that fits the standards. In order to incorporate efficiency and efficacy to the farming community-mining company relationship a community enterprise has been created in the Mallay-Oyon farming community. This is run under its own statutes; there is work division and implementation of business units. All these are expected to raise professionalism and develop trust in the farming community-mining company relationship The strategy is to take advantage of the relationship with the mine in order to develop the human resources, to diversify the business units with the idea of gaining competitiveness in much more demanding markets.
